South Africa's Township
I never knew that some places could be so much fun, even with no malls or movies or fast food eateries until i went to Lethabile.
Lethabile (which means the place where the sun rises) is one of the many townships in South Africa. A township is predominantly occupied by the blacks of South Africa. During the Apartheid reign the blacks were restricted to certain areas of the country and could not cross over to another side without some sort of clearance or pass. Although apartheid is gone, township still remains.
I have a friend whom i met on my first day in South Africa a fun and loving girl. She left where i say but we still kept in contact with each other. Last Saturday she came to visit. I decided out of curiosity to visit her place in Township.
The drive was a long one and the night cold. The first thing that caught my attention was the peace and quiet in the neighbourhood. People were still moving around, doors were left open. There were no fences. I pointed out to my friend just in case these people did not know it was wrong to just leave your house exposed. She told me nobody stole and that everybody knew everybody. I always had this crazy idea that township was rough and dirty and just a bunch of uncultured people stayed there (that is what was portrayed in the country) but it is not true.
We dropped our bags and headed for Midi roots (their night club), boy was i in for a surprise. I have not had so much fun in my life like i did at that place. First the drinks were the same as in the city and they were cheap. Second the music was so cool, i almost found myself dancing. Third they people were so friendly even if i could not understand a word of what they said. They had to switch to English for me.
As nice places would go there is always a bit of a drawback. In my case the language barrier prevented me from making a lot of friends. The ladies thought i was a 'coconut' (this means a black trying to behave white) but later realise i was in fact a foreigner in their country. That changed their approach towards me and they became more friendly.
I had to leave the next day but not before i was given the biggest avocados i have seen in my life. I hope to visit Lethabile again and soon, it is a place to just relax and shake off the hustle of city life. Oh i cant wait for the form party there in September.
